Heavy Civil Senior Estimator
Quantify the Projects, Solve Our Customers Problems, and Support the Backlog Leading to Company Success
About Gillett Excavating
In just ten years, we’ve grown from a small residential startup into a company trusted to build the infrastructure that millions of people rely on every day, most of it buried underground, unseen but essential. Gillett has developed into a full service heavy civil and mass earthwork company that takes pride in putting infrastructure in the ground, moving mass amounts of dirt quickly, and building our customers dreams from the ground up. Our core values are centered around our team and how we provide for each other and our clients. After years of structuring and building a stable footing in the industry, we are doubling down on our best investment yet, people. We believe hard work should lead to real rewards, accountability should create opportunity, and every project is a chance to raise the standard for what this industry can be.
How You’ll Contribute
You will serve as the engine for our preconstruction phase, handling plan reviews, takeoffs, and submittal tracking from start to finish. By absorbing our estimating backlog and administrative workflows, you will enable us to bid more work with greater accuracy and consistency.
What You’ll Get To Do
- Own the Takeoff Process: Drive our preconstruction pipeline by generating precise mass earthwork, utility, and paving quantities using InSite, PlanSwift, and Bluebeam.
- Master the Software Stack: Fully leverage our estimating and takeoff tools (B2W, PlanSwift, InSite) to streamline bid preparation for $500K to $6M commercial and subdivision projects.
- Scrutinize Plans & Specs: Perform thorough plan and spec reviews to catch utility conflicts, design discrepancies, and constructability issues before they hit the field.
- Manage Administrative Preconstruction: Take ownership of project file organization, document control, addenda tracking, and submittal reviews to keep upcoming jobs cleanly structured.
- Collaborate on Bid Assembly: Compile well-supported bid packages and reports, working directly with ownership to review numbers, finalize pricing, and hit submission deadlines.
- Close the Loop: Conduct post-bid follow-ups and participate in operational debriefs to reconcile field production data with initial estimating assumptions, sharpening our future pricing.
- Work With a High-Performing Team: Join an open, driven crew that takes pride in doing things right, learns from mistakes together, and values transparent communication.
What You Bring
- Real Civil Experience: You understand the full site package—from erosion control and demo to mass grading, utilities, paving, and restoration. You know how dirt actually moves in the field, so your quantities and takeoffs aren't just theoretical guesses.
- Software & Takeoff Fluency: You have hands-on experience running civil estimating and takeoff software (like InSite, PlanSwift, or Bluebeam) and are ready to put those tools to work to work through our bidding backlog without hand-holding.
- An Eye for Detail: You know how to read civil plans, dig through project specs, and spot utility conflicts or constructability issues before they become field problems.
- A Grounded Approach: You aren't afraid of the screen, but you respect the dirt. You know how to translate plans into accurate quantities that our field crews and project managers can actually trust.
- Readiness to Own the Process: You don't need your hand held through a takeoff or a spec review. You are organized, self-driven, and ready to take the administrative and preconstruction weight off leadership's shoulders.
